CAIRO: Five men accused of the manslaughter of a first-year engineering student, who was ran over by a bus, were handed down suspended sentences of six months in prison Thursday, Youm7 reported.
New Cairo Misdemeanor Court issued suspended sentences for four defendants, while the bus driver; the fifth defendant, paid a 2,000 EGP ($255) fine to suspend his sentence.
The accident took place in March when Yara Tareq, a student in the German University in Cairo (GUC,) was standing beside a bus waiting to board before returning home at the end of her school day.
Another bus approached at a high speed and hit her, causing a fatal skull fracture.
Following her death, Tareq’s colleagues held protests inside the university, calling for the accountability of the perpetrators.
