CAIRO: Mansoura Criminal Court signaled a death sentence against 14 Muslim Brotherhood members in two separate cases Thursday, referring their case to the Grand Mufti for a religious opinion, Youm7 reported.

In one case, 10 people were sentenced to death over killing a policeman guarding the house Hussein Qandeel, one of the judges deliberating a trial of former President Mohamed Morsi, in 2013 while he was heading home in Mansoura.

Some of the defendants confessed to the crime, according to investigations.

In another case, four were sentenced to death for belonging to a “terrorist group,” proclaiming itself as “Deterrence,” that was active in 2013 and 2014. Thirteen people are being tried in the case; nine were sentenced to life in prison, one of them in absentia. A Palestinian, Amer Mos’ad, is among the defendants.

The prosecution accuses Deterrence of targeting the police, military, anti-Brotherhood citizens, possessing weapons and infiltrating into Gaza strip to train to use arms.

After the Mufti provides his unbinding opinion to the court, it either confirms or commutes the sentence, after which defendants may appeal the sentence legally.
