CAIRO: A small fire erupted Saturday near the outer enclosure wall of ancient Egypt’s 4,000 year-oldKarnak Temple in Luxor, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Amin said in a statement.

“The limited fire erupted accidentally due to wild plants and reed grass surrounding the temple,” Amin said in a statement posted on the Antiquities Ministry’s Facebook page Sunday.

The enclosure wall along with the monuments and statues at the temple are sound, safe and have not been affected by the fire, Amin said, adding that Luxor firefighters rushed to the temple and the fire has been contained completely.

On June 13, two assailants were killed and one was injured in a thwarted attack at Karnak Temple. The attackers confronted security officials at the temple with firearms and explosives.
