CAIRO: Public transportation workers will not have a vacation during Eid el-Fit, a Muslim feast that follows the holy month of Ramadan, per a decision by Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, Youm7 reported Sunday.

The decision aims to ensure safety and security on roads during the two-day feast, Mahlab said after he held a meeting with ministers of health and transportation to discuss traffic and road safety.

Parking illegally in the downtown Cairo area should be strictly punished, and a disposal plan should be set immediately to remove abandoned cars on streets to avoid using them in “terrorist acts,” Mahlab said during the meeting.

He also ordered the total closure of Wadi el-Natron-North Coast road during Eid el-Fitr because some parts of it are still being paved.

A total of 28 air-conditioned and 34 non-conditioned trains from Cairo to Aswan will operate during the feast, providing approximately 65,000 chairs daily, Youm7 reported.

Thousands of Egyptians who live outside their hometowns return to their cities during feasts, and thousands travel to Mediterranean and Red Sea cities to spend their vacations.
