Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond comments on the agreement to establish a Government of National Accord in Libya.
Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said:
“The agreement to establish a Government of National Accord for Libya is an important first step to restoring peace and stability in Libya. I applaud the courage of the negotiators and the dedication of the UN’s Special Representative in Libya Bernardino Leon in concluding this difficult but significant process.
“Today I call on the General National Congress to join the agreement and play a vital role in shaping a new constitution and parliament for Libya. The UK remains committed to supporting Libya on its path towards peace and prosperity and stand prepared to provide assistance to rebuild the country and tackle the growing threat of terrorism in Libya and neighbouring countries.”
Additionally, Stephen Hickey, Chargé d’Affaires at the British Embassy in Cairo, commented:
“I welcome the important role that Egypt has played in supporting this agreement and helping Libyans establish a Government of National Accord. The UK will continue to work alongside Egypt in restoring peace and stability in Libya.”
