CAIRO: Egypt’s Cabinet approved Wednesday to rename Rabaa al-Adaweya Square, once hosted Muslim Brotherhood sit-in, after Attorney General Hisham Barakat whom was assassinated in a car bomb.

The square, which saw the brotherhood’s 48-day sit-in and protests demanding the reinstatement of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, will be named “The Martyr Hisham Barakat Square,” according to Youm7.

Following Barakat’s assassination in a car bomb blast late June, the Judges’ Club has called on the government to change the name the square to commemorate Barakat.

On August 14, 2013, security forces had forcibly dispersed the sit-in killing at least 623, according to figures of the state-owned National Council of Human Rights.

Last year, the Human Rights Watch said that the death toll is above 1,000.
