CAIRO: Firefighters have contained a blaze that broke out Sunday in a shipyard in Abu Tartour town south of the Red Sea resort of Safaga, Al Watan News reported.

The blaze destroyed two ships and no casualties have been reported. It is not clear whether the shipyard is a state or privately-owned.

Red Sea security chief Major General Hamdy al-Gazzar received a report on the fire Monday morning before civil protection forces rushed to the scene to control the flame.

The Safaga prosecution said initial investigations indicate a short circuit has caused the blaze.

Abu Tartur, located 50 kilometers south of Hurghada, houses one of Egypt’s largest phosphate and ore reserves. A port has been established in Safaga to export phosphate and mineral resources extracted from the Abu Tartur mines.
