CAIRO: The Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Mubarak-era Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif to five years in prison and to pay a nine-million EGP ($1.5 million) fine over corruption charges related to illegal enrichment charges, judicial sources told Youm7 Wednesday.

In September 2012, an Egyptian court sentenced Nazif to three years in prison and to pay a nine- million EGP over using his power to illicitly gain public assets including shares in telecommunications firms.

The verdict was subsequently overturned in 2014 by the Cairo Court of Cassation and Nazif was granted a retrial.

According to investigations carried out in December 2011 by the Illicit Gains Authority, Nazif illegally amassed 64 million EGP.‎

In February, the Cairo Criminal Court has acquitted Nazif and Mubarak-era Interior Minister Habib al-Adly of illegal profiting and squandering public funds in a retrial dubbed by media as “license plates.”

Nazif was released in February after repaying the illegally-obtained funds.

Appointed by Mubarak in 2004, Nazif was dismissed and replaced by Ahmed Shafiq in January 2011 in an attempt made by Mubarak to calm protestors nationwide during the 25 January Revolution.

Former President Hosni Mubarak and most of his regime figures have been cleared of murder and corruption charges filed against them since the 2011 uprising.
