Egypt to compensate families of victims killed in Nile boat collision

CAIRO: The family of each victim killed in the pass4engers boat-cargo ship collision that took place south of Cairo Wednesday will get 80,000 EGP ($10,000,) Youm7 quoted cabinet spokesperson Hossam el-Qaweesh Saturday.

The governmental committee, formed by Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab to follow-up on the incident, announced that the cabinet will pay the family of each victim 60,000 EGP while Giza governorate will pay the remainder by August 2, Qaweesh said.

However, the family of each injured is expected to receive 10,000 EGP, Qaweesh said, adding that the money will be paid to the families within days.

In the same context, head of the River Transport Authority was suspended Saturday pending investigation over collision that killed at least 40 people in Giza’s northern district of al-Waraq, Youm7 quoted Mahlab Saturday.

Egypt’s health ministry said that the death toll reached 40 so far.

Moreover, a security source in Giza security directorate told Youm7 Saturday that the owner of the ferry has escaped to a governorate in Upper Egypt.

On Wednesday, a boat with over 60 people onboard celebrating engagement collided with a cargo ship causing it to sink; the cargo ship captain and his assistant have been arrested for “manslaughter” accusations, the Associated Press reported Friday.

A boat ride on the Nile River is among Egyptians’ most favorite entertainment activities especially during public holidays.
