CAIRO: The three-wheeled motorcycle known as “Tok-tok” will be banned from streets in downtown Cairo and the surrounding suburbs, in an attempt to restore order in the capital, Cairo Governor Galal Saeed said Wednesday.
Saeed added the ban will be initially implemented in the districts of Azbakeya, Abdeen, Al-Mosky, Alwayly, Bab el-Sheireya, Boulaq Abu el-Ela and downtown Cairo, Youm7 reported.
The governorate, Cairo traffic and executive bodies will coordinate to seize any violating tok-toks in the concerned regions, Saeed said, adding that a fine of 1,500 EGP ($191) will be imposed on violators.
The ban will be extended to other parts of the country to alleviate traffic congestion witnessed on a daily basis in Egypt’s streets.
Tok-toks are commonly used in poor urban areas on the outskirts of the capital. In February, the government announced it will initially outlaw import of tok-toks for one year.
