CAIRO: Trains and subways will operate free of charge across the country Aug. 6; the day of the New Suez Canal inauguration, announced Transport Minister Hani Dahy Friday.
The decision applies to all trains; it will be due on Thursday starting from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. next Thursday, Youm7 quoted Dahy.
“The ministry decided to share Egyptians their happiness,” Dahy said referring to the “historic ceremony,” which will be attended by many world leaders.
On Aug. 6, the new 72-kilometer long canal, which aims to speed up transit time and allow ships to sail into both directions at the same time, will be inaugurated.
The project was launched by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi in August 2014, and was given one year for completion.
