Court adjourns trial of ‘Zawahiry Cell’

CAIRO: A Cairo court adjourned Saturday the trial of Mohamed Rabee al-Zawahiry, the brother of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiry and 67 others to Aug. 10, in the case known as “al-Zawahiry Cell,” due to security measures, Youm7 reported.

The defendants are charged with “founding and running a terrorist organization linked to Al-Qaeda, which targets state institution, the police and Christians to spread chaos and endangers the national security.”

Among the defendants are the former Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehad el-Haddad, Khairat el-Shater and Hassan Malek, who were referred to the Criminal Court in April 2014 by late Attorney-General Hisham Barakat.

According to investigations, Zawahiry was born in Giza; he started forming extremist jihadi groups during former President Mohamed Morsi’s rule.

The group allegedly participated with Al-Qaida members in military operations in Syria.

In December 2013, Al-Shorouq Newspaper reported that Zawahiry confessed that he received g an amount of $15 million from the Muslim Brotherhood’s deputy Supreme Guide, Shater, the day before he was arrested to buy weapons for jihadi groups in the Sinai Peninsula.
