CAIRO: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrives in Egypt Tuesday to participate in the New Suez Canal inauguration ceremony scheduled for Thursday, Palestine ambassador to Egypt Gamal al-Shobki said.

During his visit, Abbas is to meet with members of the Arab Peace Initiative to discuss the latest developments on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict following escalation in violence in occupied Jerusalem. The meeting is scheduled to be held at the Arab League (AL) headquarters in Cairo Wednesday, Shobki told the Palestinian news agency (WAFA) Monday.

The meeting will also discuss Israel’s continuous west bank settlement expansion and frequent attacks Israel’s on Palestinian nationals in the west bank, Shobki said.

President Abbas received Monday an invitation from President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi after Palestine is among Arab countries to sign a protocol for a new joint force of Arab states to intervene in Middle East conflict zones. The protocol is expected to be signed during an Arab foreign ministerial meeting in Cairo later this week.

During his Monday meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry , Sisi affirmed the Palestinian case comes on top of Egypt’s foreign policy agenda.
