7 died, 40 inured in bus-camel collision south of Cairo

CAIRO:Seven passengers, including a child were killed and 40 others were injured Wednesday after their bus has hit a camel that suddenly crossed the road near Upper Egypt’s governorate of Beni Suef, Youm7 reported.

The bus crashed into the camel suddenly jumped from cattle transport truck in front of it, according to initial investigations.

Ages of the dead people ranged from 33 to 55 years old while the child has not been identified yet.

“I suddenly found a camel in front of me and I was not able to avoid it,” hospitalized bus driver Abdel Moneim Hassan said, adding that he was driving from Cairo to Minya governorate through the eastern desert road.

On May 12, two tourists were killed and nine others injured after their bus smashed into a truck north of Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Hurghada. In August 2014, 33 persons died and 41 were injured after two buses collided into a truck in Sharm el-Sheikh, South Sinai.

Over the first six months in 2014, more than 2,000 people have been killed due to road accidents in Egypt, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS.)

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that 12,000 people die annually in Egypt due “road traffic crashes.”
