CAIRO: Seven low-income couples from Suez governorate got married Tuesday in a mass wedding ceremony sponsored by local NGOs on the occasion of Egypt’s New Suez Canal inauguration ceremony, Al Masry al-Youm7 reported.

Under the auspices of the Suez-based Egyptian Third Field Army, the official ceremony was held at a mosque before the couples went to celebrate at wedding halls built by the army.

Videos of the ceremony were broadcasted live on several satellite channels. Suez governor Major General al-Araby al-Sroui, representatives from the Third Field Army and public figures were present during the ceremony.

In August 2014, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has assigned the Armed Forces’ Engineering Authority to carry out and supervise the New Suez Canal project, which is a part from the Suez Canal Corridor Development Project.

Six international firms were contracted to contribute to the digging process of the new 72-Kilometer long canal.
