Sudan releases 101 Egyptian fishermen, Egypt pardons 44 Sudanese

CAIRO: Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir pardoned Wednesday 101Egyptian fishermen detained since April for allegedly trespassing into Sudan’s territorial waters without permission, according to ashrooq.net.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi ordered a private plane to transfer the fishermen back to attend the celebrations of the New Suez Canal inauguration Thursday, Youm7 rerported.

In a similar development, Sisi pardoned 44 Sudanese detainees who will travel back to Sudan on to be sent to their country on board of the plane that will fetch the released Egyptian fishermen.

On April 9, Sudanese naval authorities detained 101 Egyptian fishermen on board three fishing boats for allegedly trespassing in its territorial waters without permission, Youm7 reported.

On July 23, the Sudanese Prosecution ordered to release the detainees. However, they were still standing trial.

Former head of the Fishermen Syndicate, Naseem Badr el-Din told the Cairo Post that they were “wrongly detained” and that they were captured in international waters on their way to Eritrea.
