CAIRO: A total of 48 motorized tricycles known as “Tok Toks” have been confiscated in downtown Cairo, in application to a July decision to ban the vehicle in Egyptian streets, Youm7 reported Saturday.

According to the decision, owners of the confiscated tok toks will be obligated to pay a fine of 1,500 EGP ($191) imposed on violators.

The ordinance, issued by the Cairo Governor Galal el-Saeed, implicates certain districts in downtown Cairo and surrounding suburbs, as a first phase in a campaign that aims to alleviate traffic congestion witnessed on a daily basis in Egypt’s streets.

Cairo Traffic Authority and districts’ heads were instructed to harshly deal with violators, and combat the spread of the “bad phenomenon” of the Tok Toks in the streets, Deputy Cairo Governor Mohamed Ayman told Youm7.

Tok-toks are commonly used in poor urban areas on the outskirts of the capital. In February, the government announced it will initially outlaw import of tok-toks for one year.
