CAIRO: Cairo Criminal court motioned Monday a death sentence against 10 defendants accused in the case known as “Zawahiri terrorist Cell,” in which 68 are facing charges of establishing a terrorist organization affiliated with the Al-Qaeda, Youm7 reported.
Mohamed Rabei el-Zawahiri, the brother of Ayman el-Zawahiri (head of the Al-Qaeda organization,) one of the defendants, was not among those sentenced to death Monday.
The case papers of the 10 defendants were sent to Egypt’s Grand Mufti for religious advice, as a customary step before upholding, canceling or changing verdict, in cases of death penalties. Mufti’s opinion, however, is not binding.
As for the other 58 defendants in the same case, the court decided to issue its final verdict against them on September 27.
The prosecution has accused the defendants of establishing and directing a “terrorist” organization aiming to “disrupt constitution and state institutions, spying with Al-Qaeda organization, planning to target security installations and inciting to kill army and police forces.”
