CAIRO: An Egyptian court motioned a death sentence for seven people and sentenced three minors to 10 years in prison Wednesday over violence that broke out outside Cairo-based Al-Ahly Sporting Club in 2014.

All convicts were sentenced in absentia; according to the Egyptian Criminal Code, those tried in absentia may receive the maximum punishment; however, when a convict appears before the court, he shall be retried.

The convicts faced charges of inciting violence against three Central Security Forces conscripts, other policemen, and Al-Ahly- goers, according to the prosecution’s investigations.

However, the Cairo Criminal Court issued the ruling without disclosing the exact date in which the incident occurred, Youm7 reported.

The ruling has been referred to Egypt’s Grand Mufti, who will provide his religious opinion on the death sentences to the court before it officially issues or commutes them.
