76 die of heat exhaustion, scorching wave hits Egypt Friday

CAIRO: The Health Ministry said 15 more people died of the scorching heat wave Wednesday, raising the death toll of this week to 76 cases.

Most of the recent death cases are of elderly people, according to a Thursday statement by the ministry.

It added that some 447 were hospitalized over heat exhaustion across the country, 220 of them left hospital after treatment.

Egyptians have witnessed extreme hot days, where temperature degrees exceeded 45 degrees over the past five days.

The current wave is believed to be witnessed every 11 years, as it comes from India and Arabia Peninsula, according to the ministry, which warned that another extreme heat wave to start Friday through Monday.

The Ministry has called upon citizens, especially the elderly and those who suffer chronic disease to take necessary preventive measures by avoiding direct exposure to the sun and not to leave house except for extreme necessity.

Rise in body temperature, redness of face and dry skin, inflammation of the eye, headaches and muscular contractions, dizziness and vomiting are among sunstroke symptoms listed by the ministry.

It has also advised citizens to drink large amounts of water, avoid coffee and tea, daily bathing with lukewarm water, avoid poorly ventilated places and wear loose fitting clothes.
