CAIRO: A low-ranking tourism police officer was shot dead on his way home from work Wednesday by unidentified assailants on a motorbike, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Mostafa Ayoub was on his own motorbike in Abshway town of Fayoum, southwest of Cairo, when he was shot. He was transferred to a hospital where he died of his injuries, according to the statement.
Police and military personnel have been targeted since the 2013 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi; hundreds of them have died since then.
While the most wide-scale attacks have occurred in North Sinai, smaller-scale attacks in Egypt have mostly used improvised explosive devices and hit-and-run shootings on motorbikes; car bombs have also been used.
