CAIRO: Clashes have erupted between the police and Muslim Brotherhood protesters in Cairo Friday, yet on a limited scale, on the second anniversary of the bloody dispersal of the Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in, Youm7 reported.

Dozens of protesters took to streets in Talbiya, on Giza’s busy Haram Street, and in Matariya, eastern Cairo. The police used tear canisters to contain the demonstrations, forcing the protesters to withdraw to side streets.

Both areas have frequently been havens for Brotherhood protests. Matariya witnessed the deaths of 12 on Jan. 24-26 during the fourth anniversary of Egypt’s 2011 uprising. A total of 23 across Egypt died in the events, including protesters, policemen, and persons planting explosives.

Several violent protests and bomb attacks have occurred in the Haram area; some of the attacks were claimed by Ajnad Misr and the Popular Resistance in Giza.

According to state-owned National Council for Human Rights, the number of people killed in the dispersal of Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda sit-ins Aug. 14, 2015 exceeded 600 persons; while Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International reported that more than 1,000 people were killed. The Brotherhood sets the figure at over 3,000.
