CAIRO: A total of 95 people were deported Tuesday from Tobruk, Libya, for allegedly entring Libya illegally.

“The immigrants were arrested in the Libyan desert, as they entered the country illegally,” Spokesman for Illegal Immigration Department Walid Al-Orfy stated Wednesday.

On Aug. 2, 89 people were also arrested at the Egypt-Libya Sallum border, the Matrouh security directorate stated.

Libya is a common gateway country, through which many migrants attempt to emigrate to Europe.

In July, 52 people were arrested in Al-Beheria Governorate while attempting to emigrate to Italy, Youm7 reported.

In 2014, 85 percent of the 167,184 migrants had traveled from the Libyan coast, according to UN.

Both the Libyan and Italian authorities have been cooperating with the Egyptian counterparts to clamp down on illegal travel.
