CAIRO: The prosecution has released a total of 125 defendants accused in riots incidents pending their cases, Youm7 reported Wednesday.

The released include students and those who have health issues “due to their circumstances and to save their futures,” Youm7 quoted a decision by the acting Attorney General.

Few months ago, the prosecution has announced reviewing dozens of complaints submitted by families of the detainees against the detention of their relatives. On Jan. 22, the prosecution released 100 students, who were arrested on charges of committing violence and illegal assembly; this patch was followed with additional 120 defendants in March including elderly and students in consideration of educational needs and health status.

In parallel to the prosecution’s releases, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has pardoned dozens of prisoners on occasion of national vacations, most recently in Eid el-Fitr (Feast of breaking fasting,) in application to a pardon decree he issued in January to release prisoners.

The to-be-released prisoners must fulfill certain conditions, including: they must have served half the term of their final sentences and their offences must not have been violent crimes or attacking public or police properties.
