CAIRO: The 44 imprisoned Sudanese miners, who were recently pardoned by President Abdel Fatah al- Sisi, will be deported to Khartoum Friday on board of a private plane, Sudanese Ambassador to Egypt Abdel Mahmoud Abdel Halim told Al-Ahram.
The miners were pardoned by Sisi before the new Suez Canal inauguration on August 6; at the meantime, 101 Egyptian fishermen who were held and faced trial in Sudan were also released.
Halim told a Sudanese news agency that a decision to release the pardoned Sudanese miners was issued, according to Al-Ahram.
The miners were transferred to a hotel in Cairo where they stayed Thursday night. He added that the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo will honor them before they leave, according to Halim.
The 101 Egyptian fishermen, who were accused of trespassing Sudanese territorial waters, arrived in Egypt days after their release. The delay in the release of the 44 Sudanese was because “the detainees were in more than one prison,” according to the Sudanese Newspaper al-Youm al-Tali.
