CAIRO: U.S. State Department Special Envoy for Libya Jonathan Winer arrived in Cairo late Friday for talks on finding a political settlement in conflict-torn country, Youm7 reported.

During his 2-day visit, Winer is scheduled to meet with senior Egyptian officials to discuss the continued coordination between Egypt and the U.S. to solve issues related to the situation in Libya including combating terrorism and illegal immigration.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with his Libyan counterpart Sameh Al-Dairi Wednesday and discussed calls by Libya’s internationally recognized government to lift the arms embargo imposed on Libya in 2011, Youm7 reported.

Following the ouster of Muammar Gadhafi in 2011, Libya has descended into factional fighting, with different militias and group controlling various parts of the country. A government based in the eastern city of Tobruk is the most widely recognized internationally.

In February, Libya and Egypt called on the United Nations Security Council to lift the arms embargo on Libya, impose a naval blockade on areas not controlled by the country’s internationally recognized government and help build the country’s army to tackle IS and other militants.
