CAIRO: The J. Walter Thompson (JWT) advertising company has won a bid worth $68 million to promote Egyptian tourism in 27 foreign markets for the next three years; Youm7 quoted chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Authority (ETA) Sami Mahmoud Saturday.

“The winning company was instructed to allocate not less than 25 percent of the campaign budget on cultural tourism sector which has been badly affected by the political turmoil in the aftermath of 2011 uprising,” according to Sami.

Tourism Minister Khaled Ramy is scheduled to officially announce more details on the marketing campaign in an international press conference Sunday, Samy said.

JWT was a part of coalition of companies tasked with the organization of the New Suez Canal inauguration ceremony held in Aug. 6.

Egypt’s political turmoil following the 2011 January uprising that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak has badly affected tourism sector; Egypt’s second most important source of national income after the Suez Canal provides direct and indirect employment to up to 12.6 percent of the country’s workforce.

Revenues from tourism represent 11.3 percent of Egypt’s gross domestic product.
