CAIRO: The third air-conditioned metro carriage on the Helwan-Marg line, the oldest line of Cairo’s metro, will operate before the end of this week; Youm7 quoted an official at the Metro Company Monday.

“The metro will operate after the completion of all tests and experiments to re-assure its safety procedures,” the source added.

The first carriage entered service June 18 and the second one was operated before the Eid el-Adha holiday in July.

The new trains are part of a South Korean deal to export 20 trains purchased from Hyundai Rotem for 2.2 billion EGP ($288.8 million.)

The use of the air-conditioned carriages aims to improve service for metro passengers, who constitute approximately 3.5 million Cairenes using the fast, cheap and reliable public transportation on a daily basis.

The old metro carriages will be under maintenance, according to previous statements by the Minister of Transportation Hany Dahy.

Works at the national project of the Third Metro Line, which aims to expand the subway network, is taking place.

The third phase of the project is planned to connect Imbaba and Mohandiseen districts, and pass under the Nile River to Zamalek and continue to Attaba, Abassiya, Cairo Stadium, Heliopolis and the Cairo Airport.
