CAIRO: Eight people affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, including former Member of Parliament Mohsen Rady, were sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison for being implicated in violence outside the Banha police station in July 2013.

Shubra el-Kheima Criminal Court convicted the defendants of belonging to an illegal group, joining a mob for the purpose of assaulting people, sabotaging public and private property, show of force and threatening with violence, attempting to murder a citizen, and possessing illegal weapons.

The indictment is similar to hundreds others raised against Brotherhood supporters.

Rady, 40, was elected as an MP in 2005 and 2012. In December 2012, he was elected as the secretary-general of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party in Qalyubia governorate, where Banha city is located.

Other than the clashes outside the Presidential Guards headquarters in Cairo on July 8, 2013, where over 60 people were killed, most of the wide-scale violence that followed President Mohamed Morsi’s ouster on July 3, 2013 occurred in August the same year, after hundreds were killed during the dispersal of the the Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in.
