CAIRO: General Secretary of Egypt’s Doctors Syndicate Mona Mina has called on Health Minister Adel al-Adawy to resign to “avoid the frequent scandals happening when officials visit public hospitals.”
“The Prime Minster Ibrahim Mahlab and al-Adawy are the ones responsible for chaos, corruption and lack of resources at the public hospitals, and they try to charge the doctors with all of this,” Mina said in a press conference held at the syndicate’s headquarters Thursday.
The conference was held days after Mahlab visited the National Heart Institute June 6 where he expressed his “shock and surprise” at the hospital’s bad services.
Mina called for a comprehensive reform within the health sector that includes raising the state’s budget devoted to health care from 3 percent to 15 percent.
Last week, a wild cat received Mahlab during his sudden visit to a Giza -based medical institute specialized in treating bilharzias.
“This is absurd,” said Mahlab as he saw the cat walking in one of the corridors of the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute.
Some Facebook users launched several pages to shed light on deteriorating conditions at slums and government-owned schools and facilities.
“The state needs first to stop its privatization plans for some public hospitals and apply real feasibility studies to the National Health insurance project,” Mina added.
