CAIRO: Egypt welcomed a Wednesday peace deal signed by South Sudan President Salva Kiir and rebels, emphasizing that the political will to uphold joint action and achieve the best interest of the people of South Sudan with its entire spectrum.

In a Thursday statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Egypt urged parties to the deal and the states and organizations sponsoring it to “pay adequate attention to tackle reservations and observations raised about some terms of the agreement.”

Thousands have been killed in the new state since December 2013, and Kiir only signed the deal under pressure from the U.S. and the U.N., after about a week from signing the deal by his rival Riek Machar, AP reported.
