CAIRO: A total of 13 drinking water stations in Upper Egypt’s governorates of Asyut and Minya have been closed shortly after a diesel spill was spotted, Youm7 reported Friday.
The leak is reportedly caused by a steam power plant in the area.
“The environment police has controlled the diesel spill in the River Nile in Asyut and surrounded it with rubber barriers so as not to be washed into the river,” said Kawthar Hanafy, head of the Central Department for Crisis and Disaster at the Ministry of Environment.

For its part, the Ministry of Electricity closed the unit causing the leakage. The power plant is reportedly dilapidated as its construction dates back to 1960, according to a source at the ministry.
