CAIRO: A low-ranking police officer was killed on his way home from work early Friday in Sohag governorate after he was shot by unknown assailants, Youm7 reported.

The policeman, who worked at Tahta police station, suffered three gunshots. During the past two years, a number of policemen have been killed on their way from work in drive-by shootings.

Police and military personnel have been targeted since the 2013 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi; hundreds of them have died since then.

While the most wide-scale attacks have occurred in North Sinai, smaller-scale attacks in Egypt have mostly used improvised explosive devices and hit-and-run shootings on motorbikes; car bombs have also been used.
