CAIRO: A total of 52 Egyptians were deported by Italy Thursday for arriving illegally by sea on a fishing boat, according to a statement by the Cairo Airport authorities.

The group arrived in Cairo on an Egyptian plane from Catania, and informed the Egyptian authorities that they were arrested once they entered Italian territories.

Also on Thursday, 10 Egyptians were arrested in Rosetta, Beheira before boarding a boat to allegedly travel to Italy after paying 35,000 EGP ($4,470) each to two smugglers, according to Youm7.

Some 57 Egyptians were deported from Italy in August over violating the residency law. Egypt has received waves of deported Egyptians from Italy and Saudi Arabia a few times this year, and has foiled dozens of illegal attempts to travel to Europe and Libya.

Minister of Manpower Nahed Ashry met Tuesday with representatives from 18 ministries to set a concerted strategy to counter illegal immigration.
