CAIRO : Egypt doe not aim to enrich uranium, and the establishment of nuclear power plants is for only producing electricity, said Egyptian Atomic Energy Agency Chairperson Atef Abdel Hamid Saturday.
Producing electricity from nuclear power plants will take from 7 to 10 years since the beginning of the project, he told al-Haya al-Youm talk show on Al-Hayat Channel.
Egypt has reached an agreement with Russia to build first nuclear power plant for peaceful activities on 55 square kilometers in the Mediterranean city of Dabaa. The plant will consist of eight reactors; Russia will build the first four, and construction of the other four will be via international tender.
Each reactor will produce 1,200 megawatts. The cost is estimated at $5 billion per reactor. The plant construction is scheduled to start in mid-2016 and is expected to be completed by 2020.
