CAIRO: The South Giza Public Funds Prosecution has ordered Monday the detention of former parliamentarian Hamdy al-Fakharany for four days pending investigations over charges of bribery, Youm7 reported.

Fakharany, is known for having filed several lawsuits exposing corruption before the January 2011 uprising; he was arrested Sunday evening for allegedly demanding a 5 million EGP ($641,000) bribe in return for dropping a lawsuit he had filed earlier against a businessman named Samuel Thabet, Youm7 reported.
Fakharany has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Thabet to claim back land which the latter had bought in 2009 from the Nile Cotton Ginning Company.

According to Thabet, Fakharany asked for the bribe last year. Thabet reported to the police who installed surveillance cameras to record the meeting of Fakharany and Thabet at the villa of a former parliamentarian who brokered the alleged deal, Youm7 reported.
The Attorney General has imposed a media gag order on the case, limiting further coverage of the issue to official statements by prosecution.
