CAIRO: Britain supports the Egyptian government efforts to combat corruption, British Ambassador John Casson told The Cairo Post, the day after the Former Agriculture Minister was arrested for corruption.

“I cannot comment on any individual case, but if you look at the successful countries in the 21th century, they all take the same steps in fighting corruption,” Casson added on the sidelines of his participation in the 2nd day of the Euromoney Egypt conference 2015.

“We support the Egyptian government’s efforts to combat corruption,” as well as other efforts to increase investment in improving the quality of education, decrease state burdens, he continued.

Resigned Minister of Agriculture Salah Helal and other four people were taken into custody Monday pending investigations over accusations of “asking and taking bribes” for facilitating the sale of a 2,500-acre price of land in Delta’s Beheira city, stated the High State Security Prosecution in a statement Monday.

A few minutes after submitting his resignation to Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab Monday noon, Helal was arrested in Tahrir Square, per a decision from the Administrative Control Authority.
