CAIRO: Five mega projects were tendered to combat the capital’s crippling traffic congestion, Cairo’s Governor Galal Saeed  announced Sunday, Youm7  reported.

The projects are worth an estimated 1 billion EGP ($127.8million) investments, Saeed stated.

One of the projects is scheduled to include the contribution of specialized companies in public transport with buses, with investments of about 300 million EGP ($38.35 million.)

Another aims to establish a market for used cars and an exhibition ground for new cars on a 60-acres area in New Cairo, instead of an exhibition inside the city that causes a traffic jam, especially on Friday and Sunday on weekly basis. The project is to cost around 250 million EGP ($31.96 million.)

The third project is about establishing a multi-story underground garage at the Sheraton area near the Cairo Airport, with a 1000-car capacity, at a cost of 250 million EGP.

Also, a project was presented for establishing a truck garage in the Tora area, to prevent big lorries coming from Upper Egypt from entering the capital, instead discharging cargo into smaller vehicles to not to affect traffic is estimated to cost around 100 million EGP ($12.78 million.)

The fifth project will establish 10 mechanical garages in the areas that lack convenient parking areas, with a total capacity of 400 cars, and an investment of 100 million EGP ($12.78 million.)

“Four out of the five projects have been already tendered to be assessed and choose the best submitted proposals, while the fifth is to be tendered in few days,” Saeed said.
