Moreover, 2,400 cigarette packs were seized in Marsa Matrouh, Sallum and Siwa, beside a number of arms, medications, drugs and customs unclear metal medical tools, according to the military spokesperson.

In the western military zone, about 707 alleged illegal immigrants were caught, including 677 Egyptians, 21 Sudanese, 7 Palestinians and two Libyans; while in the northern military zone, 239 were caught, including 40 Egyptians, 99 Sudanese, 32 Somalis, 22 Ethiopians, 40 from Comoros and Syria and five Eritreans.

In June, border guards demolished three tunnels in Rafah, North Sinai used in smuggling activities, informed sources in Rafah told Youm7.

Two out of the three tunnels were discovered during construction works at the buffer zone of Rafah, and the third one, 1,100-meter-long, was uncovered south of Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

A one-kilometer buffer zone along Egypt-Gaza border was announced in October 2014 following a militant attack that killed more than 30 soldiers in North Sinai.
