CAIRO: Five tons of marijuana were seized on a boat in Hurghada, the military spokesperson announced Tuesday.
The drug, stored in a tourist felucca that had been reported as suspicious, was confiscated along with 95 mobile phones. No persons were on the boat at the time. Navy forces are combing the cost to search for the persons responsible.
Marijuana and hash are common recreational drugs among many Egyptian youth, and the military regularly seizes quantities of the drug in the Sinai, where much of it enters the country.
In August, Qatari Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Hajri was arrested for the possession of cannabis; Al-Hajri was arrested during the airport entry procedures in Cairo.
The Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Police reported in May that security forces in the southern Sinai’s city of Taba arrested an Israeli tourist over the possession of drugs, after he was observed smoking a joint, Youm7 reported.
