CAIRO: Monthly Al-Azhar Magazine Editor-in Chief Mohamed Omara has resigned, following accusations over “insulting Christianity,” youm7 reported Saturday.

Omara, a member of al-Azhar Scholars Authority, has distributed free booklets with the magazine copies. Al-Azhar Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb has accepted the resignation.

The Egyptian Union of Human Rights Organization chief Naguib Gabriel filed June 7 a police complaint against Omara, accusing him of “disturbing peace and public security and spoiling relations between Muslims and Christians.” The booklets in questions include phrases that describe Christianity as a “failed religion,” according to the complaint.

In May, another lawsuit was filed against Tayeb, demanding him to dismiss Omara from the magazine for “belonging to the Muslim brotherhood.” The Administrative Judiciary Court set June 16 to consider the case.

The former interim government designated the Brotherhood a “terrorist group” in December 2013.
