CAIRO: Four people were fatally shot in a gunfire exchange with the security forces in Alexandria, the Interior Ministry announced in a statement Wednesday, which alleged those killed were affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to the statement, those slain “had been wanted by the authorities for allegedly committing terrorist acts including killing a police officer and detonating explosives in the vicinity of several governmental institutions.”

The forces raided the alleged MB members’ residential apartment in Alexandria’s southern district of al-Agamy “while preparing for a terrorist attack.”

Ammunitions, handguns, automatic rifle and a sum of money were found in the apartment and were confiscated, the statement said.

Egypt has witnessed a significant rise in militancy since the military-backed ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 following mass protests against his rule. According to the Interior Ministry, militant attacks have killed more than 500 security personnel since then.
