CAIRO: Two school students were killed and one was injured Thursday morning while crossing train tracks in Mahalla in the Delta, Youm7 reported.
The students were heading to school when they crossed from an unofficial point.
Train accidents are frequent in Egypt, as people and vehicles cross from unofficial points, but trains sometimes collide with cars at level crossing due to technical or human errors.
In March at least seven, including children, were killed and 24 were injured after a train hit a school bus in Cairo-Ismailia desert road while crossing from an unofficial point.
Some parents complain that their children have to go to school in hazardous conditions, especially in rural areas, like crossing a railway from unofficial points or crossing a canal by walking on tree trunks.
After 18 school students burned to death in the Delta’s Beheira as their bus crashed into an oil tank in November 2014, the government launched wide-scale drug tests on drivers, especially school bus drivers.
Poor maintenance at schools also led to student deaths last year, and the government said it renovated hundreds of schools before the academic year of 2015\2016.
