CAIRO: A 12-kilogram (26.4 lb) tumor has been extracted from an elderly woman’s right ovary in South Luxor, Youm7 reported Friday.
The surgery was conducted in Esna Central Hospital and lasted for five hours.
The head of the hospital Khalaf Omar told Youm7 that the operation was successful and that the tumor was extracted without any complications, despite “limited preparations” at the hospital for such kind of surgeries.
El-Saeed Abdel Hady, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, previously told Youm7 that ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers in Egypt according to international statistics. He said that the reasons for 90 percent of the cases are “unknown,” while there is a genetic predisposition in between five to 10 percent of the cases due to a “disorder in genes causing breast and ovarian cancer together, which is called BRCA1 and BRCA2.”
He also noted that most of the cases that the doctors receive come in later stages of the disease “third and fourth stages.” Two ways of treatment have been researched; either through surgery then chemotherapy or applying half of the chemotherapy on the patient before the surgery and the other half after it.
Studies in Egypt in 2010 have found that ovarian cancer rates to be higher in urban compared to rural areas, according to a US research paper “Ovarian Cancer Incidence: Current and Comprehensive Statistics.”
In April, a 65-year old woman underwent a surgery to extract both her ovaries and a 13-kilogram tumor in Upper Egypt’s governorate of Asyut.
The woman was suffering from swelling in her abdomen, indigestion, chronic constipation, difficulty in breathing and insomnia
