CAIRO: Egypt and Belarus have discussed possible “cooperation in manufacturing metro and train carriages,” state-owned news agency MENA quoted Belarusian Ambassador in Cairo Sergei Rachkov.

MENA reported Friday that Rachkov visited a factory producing carriages for passenger trains, freight wagons, trams and metro.

During his visit, Rachkov discussed opportunities of carrying out mutual projects with Belarusian factories, including Mogilev Carts and Stadler Minsk companies that are specialized in the field of railways.

The Ministry of Transport has recently signed deals with other countries to import new metro and train carriages.

Egypt has operated four air-conditioned metro carriages on the oldest line running from Helwan to Marg districts, as part of a South Korean deal to export 20 trains purchased from Hyundai Rotem for 2.2 billion EGP ($288.8 million.)

ENA has also announced operating “VIP” trains from Cairo to both Aswan and Alexandria. The trains were manufactured by the Arab Organization for Industrialization in cooperation with China, with 55 percent of its parts made in Egypt
