CAIRO: Five million EGP ($638,750) were stolen in an armed robbery on a cash-in-transit van on October 6 Bridge in Nasr City late Sunday, Youm7 reported.
While the van was near the Finance Ministry, armed men stopped the van and seized the cash at gunpoint. The driver and other passengers in the van were unharmed and the prosecution has summoned them to testify.
A number of cash-in-transit vehicles have been robbed in recent years.
A total of 1.3 million EGP ($166,000) were robbed by gunmen in 10th of Ramadan City when staff in two corporate vehicles were held up at gunpoint after they had withdrawn the funds from Al-Ahly Bank Sept. 20.
Six convicts accused of armed robbery challenged in June sentences of life in prison handed down to them in March. In February 2013, they robbed a vehicle of Banque Misr and stealing 1.2 million EGP in Damietta.
