CAIRO: The attempt of 20 persons to illegally travel to Libya was foiled Monday in Matrouh, Youm7 reported.

Fourteen of the defendants arrested are from Minya in Upper Egypt, four are from Matrouh and one is from Beheira.

A total of 2,215 people were arrested for illegal immigration in September, according to military spokesperson Mohamed Samir.

Egypt arrests dozens almost on weekly basis for attempting to travel illegally to Europe through the Delta’s Mediterranean shores or to Libya through desert routes in the Western Desert. Many of the migrants are Egyptian.

On Sunday, 10 Syrians and Iraqis drowned after the fishing boat transporting them sank. Twenty-five others were rescued and the owner of the boat was detained.
