CAIRO: Several international observers have paid inspection visits to monitor the first phase of Egypt’s parliament elections that began Sunday in 14 governorates.
Members of the joint local- international election observers visited the Ahmed Zwayel school polling station in Giza’s district of Omrania to follow up on the elections process, Youm7 reported.
The first phase of the elections kicked off Sunday for over 27 million Egyptian voters who live in Egypt. Over 2,600 candidates contest in the first phase carried out in 103 constituencies in 14 governorates including Giza.
The mission, with its 150 members, is set to visit 70 constituencies nationwide during the 2-day voting that will end Monday at 9 p.m.
A mission of election observers from the Arab League, headed by assistant secretary general Haifa Abu Ghazaleh inspected the voting process at the Gamal Abdel Nasser school polling station in Giza’s constituency of Dokki and Agouza where 34 independent candidates are in the running for two seats.
The U.S. Consul General to Alexandria Stephen Fakan has visited several police stations in Alexandria’s districts of Louran, Mostafa Kamel and Roshdy. A well-informed source at the High Elections Committee (HEC) said that Fakan obtained a permit for observing the electoral process.
