CAIRO: A judge from the State Litigation Authority (SLA) was killed in a car accident Tuesday after finishing his task overseeing a polling station in Upper Egypt, secretary-general of SLA Mohamed Abdel Latif told Youm7.

Judge Haitham Ahmed died after his car crashed into another on the way from a polling station in Qena to Sohag, where he resides.

Another judge, Saber Saeed, was killed in another car accident while he was on his way to Asyut, also in Upper Egypt, to open his designated polling station.

Hundreds of judges and prosecutors supervised the parliamentary elections across Egypt. A few of them reported receiving threats against participating in the poll.

The first phase of the parliamentary elections was held Sunday-Monday for over 27 million Egyptian voters who live in Egypt. Over 2,600 candidates contested in the first phase carried out in 103 constituencies in 14 governorates, including Giza, Alexandria, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Minya, Asyut, the New Valley, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea, Beheira, and Matrouh.

Initial results of the first phase of Egypt’s parliamentary elections indicate a landslide victory of the “For the Love of Egypt’ electoral list,” with a total turnout in the first phase of 30 percent, according to local media outlets.

The second phase will be held Nov. 22-23, covering 13 governorates including Cairo.

Any run-offs necessary will be scheduled for Oct 26-27 and Nov 30-Dec, with the final results announced in December.
