Parliament candidates enter electoral silence Sunday ahead of run-off voting

CAIRO: The campaigning of 222 parliament candidates, who will be present in the run-off elections, will enter electoral silence Sunday noon, Youm7 reported Saturday.

The first round of the parliament elections inside and outside Egypt ended Oct.19, where only four out of 226 candidates secured parliament seats, according to High Elections Committee (HEC) results.

The run-off phase will be carried out abroad on Monday and Tuesday, while in Egypt, it will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Once the electoral silence enter into force at noon Sunday, all promotional activities by the candidates in their constituencies will be banned.

Any violation to the silence, candidates will have to pay fine ranging from 10,000 EGP ($1,500) to 100,000 EGP. Candidates breaching the electoral silence could be excluded from the parliament election race at the discretion of the HEC; the only body regulating the elections’ affairs.

The first round was held in 14 governorates of Giza, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Minya, Asyut, the New Valley, Sohag, Qena , Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea, Alexandria, Beheira, and Marsa Matrouh.

The second round will be held Nov. 22 and 23 in the governorates of Cairo, Qalubia, Dakahlia, Menoufia, Gharbia, Kafr El-Sheikh, Sharqia, Damietta, Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, North Sinai, and South Sinai.
